What we fix. How we've fixed it.
Core AWS problem areas — each with real patterns we've worked through.
Real Engagement
Full-Stack Infrastructure Modernization
5-person engineering team. Full transformation completed within a few working weeks.
Challenge
All infrastructure managed manually via the AWS Console. No way to spin up new environments consistently — every deployment was a one-off. Developers deployed via SSH with long-lived IAM access keys stored in CI. No account structure, no audit trail, no path to reproducibility.
What we did
Worked alongside their engineering team to migrate entire infrastructure to Terraform — every resource, every environment, fully declarative. New environments deployable in minutes from a single variable change. Custom AMIs eliminate OS-level drift.
Moved to AWS Organizations with dedicated accounts per environment. Replaced all long-lived IAM credentials with OIDC for GitHub Actions. SSM Run Command replaces SSH entirely — no open ports, no standing keys. The team owned every decision and understands what was built.
01
Infrastructure as Code & CI/CD
Transform manual ClickOps environments into fully declarative, version-controlled infrastructure. We design modular Terraform architectures, migrate existing resources with minimal disruption, and wire up GitHub Actions pipelines with automated plan-apply workflows, drift detection, and policy enforcement via Sentinel or OPA.
Common patterns
Problem
IaC Migration
Manual ClickOps creating drift, inconsistent environments, and no audit trail across production infrastructure.
Architectural Solution
Moving to modular Terraform with GitHub Actions CI/CD. Automated drift detection and state management in S3 with DynamoDB locking.
Problem
CI/CD Pipeline Modernization
Deployment pipeline taking 45+ minutes. Manual approval gates, no rollback strategy, high-blast-radius monolithic deploy steps.
Architectural Solution
Decomposed pipeline into parallel stages using GitHub Actions and CodeDeploy. Blue/green deployments with automatic rollback on CloudWatch alarm breach.
02
Multi-Account Governance
Design and implement a landing zone using AWS Control Tower. Establish account vending pipelines, apply Service Control Policies for hard security guardrails, centralize logging into a dedicated Log Archive account, and wire billing alerts and cost anomaly detection across all OUs.
Common patterns
Problem
AWS Organizations & Governance
Uncontrolled account sprawl, inconsistent security policies, and no centralized billing visibility across business units.
Architectural Solution
Multi-account governance using AWS Control Tower and Service Control Policies (SCPs). Automated account provisioning with guardrails.
03
Cost Optimization & FinOps
Audit spend across all services. Rightsize EC2 and RDS instances using CloudWatch utilization data. Identify idle and unattached resources. Model Savings Plans and Reserved Instance coverage for predictable workloads. Implement tagging strategy and Cost Allocation Tags for per-team showback reports.
Common patterns
Problem
Cost Optimization (FinOps)
Cloud spend growing year over year with no visibility into per-service costs or rightsizing opportunities. No tagging discipline.
Architectural Solution
Cost Allocation Tags enforced via SCPs. EC2 and RDS rightsizing via Compute Optimizer. Savings Plans coverage modeled against actual usage patterns.
Problem
Serverless Cost Spike
Lambda function costs spiking unexpectedly. No concurrency limits, no reserved capacity, recursive invocation loops going undetected.
Architectural Solution
Reserved and provisioned concurrency tuned per function. Lambda Insights enabled. SQS dead-letter queues and EventBridge circuit breakers prevent runaway invocations.
04
Security Hardening & Compliance
End-to-end security posture review against CIS AWS Foundations and SOC 2 controls. Remediate public S3 exposure, over-permissive security groups, unencrypted volumes, and missing MFA enforcement. Enable Security Hub, GuardDuty, and Config with automated remediation via EventBridge and Lambda.
Common patterns
Problem
S3 Security & Compliance
Public S3 buckets, overly permissive security groups, no encryption at rest. Failed SOC 2 audit controls.
Architectural Solution
End-to-end security audit. Default-deny security groups, S3 Block Public Access, KMS encryption, AWS Config rules, and automated remediation.
05
High Availability & Disaster Recovery
Eliminate single points of failure. Design Multi-AZ architectures with ALB health checks and Auto Scaling Groups with predictive scaling policies. Define RTO/RPO targets and implement cross-region replication for S3, RDS read replicas, and Route 53 failover routing for active-passive DR.
Common patterns
Problem
High Availability & Disaster Recovery
Single region deployment with no DR plan. Manual scaling during traffic spikes. Downtime during AZ failures affecting SLA.
Architectural Solution
Multi-AZ architecture with ALB health checks. Auto Scaling Groups with predictive scaling policies. Cross-region replication for critical data stores.
06
Identity & Access Management
Eliminate long-lived IAM access keys. Migrate to AWS IAM Identity Center (SSO) with SAML federation to your IdP. Enforce least-privilege using IAM Access Analyzer findings. Automate key rotation policies and build role-based access control boundaries using permission boundaries and SCPs.
Common patterns
Problem
Identity Center (SSO) & Key Mitigation
Long-lived IAM access keys rotated manually. No centralized authentication. Security team has no visibility into access patterns.
Architectural Solution
Migrated to AWS IAM Identity Center with SAML federation. Eliminated all long-lived keys. IAM Access Analyzer used to identify and remove unused permissions.
07
VPC & Network Design
Design secure, segmented VPC architectures with proper subnet tiering — public, private, and isolated. Configure routing, NAT gateways, VPC peering, and Transit Gateway for multi-VPC environments. Implement security group and NACL rulesets with least-privilege defaults, and set up VPC Flow Logs for traffic visibility.
Common patterns
Problem
Flat Network with Overexposed Resources
All workloads in a single VPC with no subnet segmentation. Databases reachable from the internet. Security groups opened by IP range that no one manages.
Architectural Solution
Redesigned VPC with public/private/isolated tiers. Databases moved to isolated subnets with no inbound rules. NAT gateway for outbound-only access. Flow Logs feeding into CloudWatch for traffic auditing.
08
Container Orchestration
Design and deploy container workloads on ECS Fargate or EKS. Define task definitions, service scaling policies, and load balancer integration. Set up ECR with image scanning, lifecycle policies, and OIDC-based push from CI. For EKS — cluster setup, node group management, IRSA for pod-level IAM, and Helm-based deployments.
Common patterns
Problem
Containers Running on EC2 Without Orchestration
Docker containers deployed manually on EC2. No health checks, no auto-recovery, no scaling. Deployments require SSH and manual restarts.
Architectural Solution
Migrated to ECS Fargate with Application Load Balancer. Blue/green deployments via CodeDeploy. Auto Scaling on CPU and memory. ECR with image vulnerability scanning on push.
09
Serverless & API Design
Design and deploy Lambda-based backends with API Gateway — REST or HTTP APIs with proper authorizers, throttling, and usage plans. Structure functions for cold-start performance, set concurrency limits, and wire up dead-letter queues. Build event-driven pipelines with SQS, SNS, and EventBridge. Model costs and prevent runaway invocations before they hit your bill.
Common patterns
Problem
Uncontrolled Lambda Costs & No API Protection
Lambda functions with no concurrency limits. API Gateway exposed without throttling or authorizers. Recursive invocation loops discovered only after a surprise bill.
Architectural Solution
Reserved concurrency per function. API Gateway usage plans with per-key throttling. WAF rules on API Gateway. SQS dead-letter queues and Lambda Insights dashboards for visibility before issues escalate.
10
GDPR & EU Data Compliance on AWS
Built for US companies expanding into the EU market — and EU companies that need to get their AWS infrastructure GDPR-ready. We combine hands-on AWS infrastructure expertise with direct GDPR implementation experience to translate regulatory requirements into concrete technical controls: data residency, encryption, audit trails, retention policies, and breach notification readiness.
Common patterns
Problem
US Company Entering EU Market
Product stores and processes EU personal data on US-region AWS infrastructure. Legal flagged GDPR exposure. Engineering team has no EU compliance experience.
Architectural Solution
Migrated EU user data to eu-west-1 with KMS customer-managed keys. VPC endpoints prevent data leaving AWS network. S3 lifecycle policies enforce retention limits. CloudTrail covers full audit trail for data access. Data Processing Agreement templates provided.
Problem
No Data Deletion or Audit Trail
No mechanism to handle right-to-erasure requests. Logs retained indefinitely with no policy. No record of who accessed what personal data or when.
Architectural Solution
S3 Object Lock and lifecycle rules enforce retention and deletion. CloudTrail with CloudWatch alarms for sensitive data access. DynamoDB TTL for session and PII data. Documented deletion runbook per GDPR Article 17.
